Allahabad, the rivers and rickshaws.

The first thing Wikipedia taught me about Allahabad is that it is the sight that three mighty rivers converge to create a sacred space for the Hindu festival Kumbh Mela.

As we walked the beach, I remembered vaguely that I had seen video from one of the larger events–there is a particularly large gathering every 12 years (and an even larger one every 144 years).  It seems ages ago but the visuals of the scantily clad holy men revisited me as we drove by small numbers of men talking under tents.

The grounds were like any sort of festival space awaiting the crowds, there were acres of empty fields and permanent lights but very few people around.
